We’re doing Starr’s 5x5 this block. And in celebration of this seminal training program, we interviewed two of Starr’s athletes to get stories and context Coach Bill Starr: a strength & conditioning pioneer, coach, author, and businessman.

Allegiate cofounder Tim interviewed Augie Maurelli, one of Starr’s athletes in the 90’s at Johns Hopkins. And Allegiate cofounder Cody interviews Nick Frasca, Cody’s first strength & conditioning coach, and one of Starr’s athletes and friends in the 80’s at the University of Hawaii.

The Early Days with Coach Starr

Augie Maurelli reminisced about his introduction to Coach Starr at Johns Hopkins University in the early 1990s. Starr, renowned for his achievements as an Olympian and coach, immediately commanded respect and admiration among athletes. His presence in the weight room was akin to encountering a living legend—a former Olympian, Olympic coach, and prolific author.

Starr's coaching wasn't just about lifting weights. It instilled discipline, commitment, and a deep understanding of physical performance. Maurelli described how Starr's methods weren't driven solely by personality but by tangible results and a meticulous approach to training.

A Chance Encounter in Hawaii

Nick Frasca shared the fascinating story of how he first met Bill Starr. It was during Nick’s time at the University of Hawaii, where Nick had received a wrestling scholarship. Living in an apartment with other wrestlers, Nick was constantly disturbed by the loud music from a nightclub across the street. One night, he decided to confront the bouncer at the door about the noise. The bouncer’s name was Bill Starr, who turned out to be the university’s strength coach. This chance encounter marked the beginning of a close and transformative friendship.

The Training Methodology

Under Starr's tutelage, Maurelli experienced a structured yet adaptable training regimen. Starr's famous "big three, five by five" framework—emphasizing squats, bench presses, and cleans—was not a one-size-fits-all approach. Starr tailored workouts based on individual capabilities and progress, constantly adjusting to maximize results.

Maurelli vividly recalled his initial workouts, where Starr would assess his strength and endurance through rigorous sets to failure. The evaluation didn't end there. Starr meticulously tracked each athlete's progress, remembering previous performances and adjusting future workouts accordingly.

Nick underlined Starr’s pioneering role in the strength and conditioning community. He said Starr's 5x5 training program became widely known, although often misunderstood. According to Nick, many people wrongly believed the 5x5 program involved five sets of five repetitions at working weight, whereas Starr's actual method involved progressive loading across the sets.

Coach Starr's Coaching Philosophy

Central to Starr's coaching philosophy was the concept of "total tonnage"—the cumulative weight lifted over a session or period. This metric, coupled with intense, focused training sessions, formed the backbone of Starr's approach. He believed in pushing athletes to their limits while ensuring they maintained proper form and avoided injury—a balance that required physical and mental fortitude.

Maurelli spoke passionately about the holistic mentorship he received from Starr. Maurelli recalled Starr's deep insights into the historical context of strength training, including anecdotes from York Barbell and Olympic training halls. Starr's knowledge wasn't confined to the weight room; it encompassed a rich tapestry of athletic history and cultural influences.
